  Artist's Statement

My goal, artistically is to bring nature and the west to people not as fortunate as I have been, being able to grow up and live in a area where it is "part of my life."  Although elk and mountain men are my favorite subjects, I like to portray the west and other natural themes, such as, Scenes of NW Montana, all NW wildlife, Rodeos, and the "old west" as well as the "west of today" in my paintings.

 Detail is very important to me.  I spend a lot of time studing  animal 's  shapes, horns, legs, heads, eyes, etc., as welll as the gear used by "Cowboys" and "Mountain Men" and work hard to portray this in all my paintings.  In the spring, summer and fall, I spend at least one day a week, roaming the local Mountain Trails looking for unusual landscape, rocks, trees, stumps and animals, taking lots of pictures.

 I not only paint canvases, I paint on Hide, Horn, Bone, Antler, and Rock, to name a few natural surfaces.  My motto is "if it stands still I was meant to paint on it."  I paint with acrylic, do not use projectors and try to keep my subjects and scenes as true to nature and the west as possible.

Randy's love for the Mountains, History and Wildlife of NW Montana shows in each of his paintings.  Randy, at the age of 12 started his path as an artist, when he first started painting.  He began his professional career in art when he and his wife, Sandy, opened their first gallery in Dayton WY. in 1979.  In 1984, with their three daughters, they moved to Eureka, Montana where Randy opened his studio, The Natural Canvas Art Studio, at their home eight miles northwest of Eureka, in the heart of the Northern Rocky Mountains.  From the windows of Randy's studio he can see the aspen trees he uses in his paintings, as well as Douglas Fur, Bull Pine and Spruce.  Through out the winter 250+ head of elk frequent the small ranch where the McIntyre's raise  a few head of cattle.  Moose, mountain lions, wolves and bears have wondered through the ranch, and the whitetail deer are in the yard and garden every morning.  Randy and Sandy try to spend one day a week hiking in the mountains around Eureka, photographing the landscapes, animals, rocks, tree stumps and anything else that catches Randy's eye, and that he can work into one of his paintings.
